How can I help? The 519 needs volunteers for many things. Volunteers help in our programmes, on committees, with special projects, at special events and at the Front Desk. We try to fit your interests with our needs. We need different things at different times. To see what we are looking for, check our website or pick up our newsletter. Please tell us what you are good at. We can find a way to use your skills. Here are some examples of how you could help The 519: · help give
out clothing Tell us what you would like to do. Why should I volunteer? The 519 is a busy downtown community centre. We offer services and support to everyone in this neighbourhood. As a volunteer you will meet people from all walks of life. You will help improve the quality of life for other people. You will be participating in the life of your city and your community. How do I join? You need to apply to be a volunteer. Pick up an application at the The Front Desk of The 519. Once you apply, we will ask you to meet with the Volunteer Coordinator. How long do I need to stay? We ask people to volunteer for 6 months. Not everybody can make that promise, so we are flexible. Can I get a letter about my volunteering? The 519 is happy
to write a letter about your volunteer work. We will only write a letter
after you have volunteered for 3 months. You should not volunteer just
to get the letter. How to volunteer Step 1– Fill out an application Pick up an application form at the Front Desk. If you need help with the form, please ask. Make sure you give us a resume. If you do not have one, the front desk can show you what it should look like. You can hand in
your application at the Front Desk. Your application will be kept by
the Volunteer Coordinator for 3 months. During that time, if any of
the positions you've expressed interest in are available, you will be
called. The Volunteer Coordinator will ask what you can do, what your interests are, and when you are available. They will tell you what we need help with. Be sure to tell the Coordinator what you are interested in. For some positions, we need to ask the police to check your record. If we need a police check, we will tell you. The 519 will pay for the check. We will not tell anyone what the police check tells us. Step 3– Start volunteering The Coordinator will decide the best way for you to help us. Then you can start. A staff person will teach you and help you. Please tell
the Volunteer Coordinator if
you have any questions, comments or concerns. |
