Important Update: Fund Applications

The Will Munro Fund for Queer and Trans People Living with Cancer is dedicated to providing emergency financial assistance to LGBTTIAQQ2S people of all ages who are currently living with cancer in Ontario.

The Fund distributes $5,000 annually with up to $800 being awarded every two months based on need, as determined by the Will Munro Memorial Committee. The goal of the Fund is to help reduce financial hardship, improve quality of life, and enable people to focus on their health and family. The Fund is trusteed by The 519.

William (Will) Grant Munro

February 11, 1975 – May 21, 2010

Will Munro was a visual artist, DJ, activist, restauranteur and queer community organizer. Australian-born and raised in Mississauga, Ontario, Will had an uncanny ability to bring together wonderfully diverse and strange collections of people thanks to his belief that art was for everybody.

In 1995, he started volunteering for the LBGT Youthline and later enrolled in the Ontario College of Art and Design where he explored crafting, underwear, the queercore movement and punk-rock iconography. His interests extended into the world of club promotion when he started the rock n’ roll queer party Vazaleen in 2000. A free-for-all of freaks, Vazaleen lasted nine years and instigated the spread of queer culture across the city.

Through his many parties and artistic endeavors, Will maintained a vigorous engagement with Toronto’s independent and do-it-yourself art and music scenes. Although he died at age 35 following a battle with brain cancer, his influence continues to reverberate throughout the city on many levels. The 519 is proud to serve as the trustees for The Will Munro Fund for Queer and Trans People Living with Cancer, a legacy fund created through donations from Will’s family and friends.
