On November 20, 2019, The 519 will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) – an internationally recognized day to honour trans-identified people who lost their lives to systemic and social transphobia and violence. The continued importance of this day is underscored by the fact that trans, 2-spirit, and non-binary people continue to face incredibly high levels of social and systemic discrimination. TDoR is a reminder of the barriers and marginalization our trans communities continue to face, and is an opportunity for everyone to advocate for trans rights, and protest transphobia and the persistent levels of violence, discrimination, and abuse. 

 

Recognizing the diversity of our  trans, 2-spirit, and non-binary communities, The 519 will not be participating in or supporting any flag raising events this year in light of what occurred at the provincial flag raising last year, including the arrest of counter protestors.  We will be putting all our efforts towards our events for the day. The 519 continues to be dedicated to working with our communities to better understand the existing and emerging needs of trans, 2-spirit, and non-binary people. 

 

We are living in a time when the fundamental human rights of the most marginalized in our world are being consistently called into question and threatened. The 519 will continue to fight for the day when no more names are added to the list of those who have passed away due to transphobic violence. Join our Army of Lovers, organize, rise up, and refuse to remain silent in the face of transphobia. Actively work to disrupt narratives and behaviors that fail to recognize the humanity of trans communities and commit to ending violence in all its forms.

 

The 519 will continue to fight for trans human rights and will stay true to the theme of our  Trans Day of Remembrance event this year: ‘We are here together. Before, now, and forever.’
