[Media Advisory] Toronto’s queer and trans communities to protest against anti-2SLGBTQ+ hate on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBT)

Toronto, Ontario: On May 17, 2023, from 6 to 8pm, Toronto’s 2 Spirit, queer, and trans communities and allies will gather in solidarity and celebration on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBT).

Anti-2SLGBTQ+ hate is dangerously trending upwards globally and Canada is not immune. Hateful protestors are showing up at drag performances. School boards are navigating heated disputes around raising the Pride flag and the censorship of 2SLGBTQ+ material in books. Gender-affirming healthcare is being impacted by transphobic bills. We cannot allow history to repeat itself. The situation is urgent, and the time for action is now.

Prance and Protest is an act of radical queer joy. Organized by The 519, Canada’s most prominent 2SLGBTQ+ multi-service agency – it recognizes and celebrates the power of coming together as a community to unite against such acts of hate and violence.

  • When: Wednesday, May 17, 2023
  • Time: 6 to 8 pm
  • Where: Barbara Hall Park [519 Church St.]

A celebration of queer and trans joy as well as an active call for visible allyship, the event will feature local queer and drag performances by:

Kristyn Wong-Tam, MPP for Toronto Centre and Chris Moise, City Councillor for Toronto Centre will also be in attendance.

The media is invited to join us on IDAHOBT to witness and highlight how Toronto’s 2SLGBTQ+ communities are actively mobilizing to defend their spaces, culture, rights, and well-being. Spokespersons will be available for comment prior to the event or in advance by request.
