ELEGIBILITY TO APPLY

  • The student must be enrolled in a post-secondary or bridging program that requires them to complete a certain number of hours in their field of study as a prerequisite for graduate.
  • The student’s academic institution must be registered and in good standing with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities or their appropriate regional governing body.

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Reporting to the Communications coordinator, the student will support the community relations department creating content based on The 519 programs. This student placement will also develop graphic design materials, support internal events with photography, and social media support.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Design digital and print materials (e.g., posters, social media graphics, newsletters, brochures) aligned with brand guidelines.
  • Assist in writing and editing website content, newsletters, and social media posts.
  • Contribute to the creation of social media content (e.g., captions, graphics, videos).
  • Monitor and assist in the management of social media channels (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn).
  • Assist with scheduling posts and responding to engagement.
  • Assist in coordinating photography, video shoots, and other creative projects.
  • Work collaboratively with all staff, volunteers, and external partners to ensure a welcoming, accessible, and affirming space at The 519.
  • Implement and abide by The 519’s policies and procedures and comply with all applicable legislation and regulations including The 519’s anti-discrimination and harassment policies, accessibility

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary and/or graduate degree in communications, graphic design or related field
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of design programs
  • Experience with photography and photo editing
  • Experience in developing outreach materials, such as posters, social media graphics, newsletters, brochures
  • Strong written communication skills for crafting social media posts, newsletter blurbs, or internal comms.
  • Experience with creating or managing content—personal, academic, or volunteer-based.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and experience in collaborative work
  • Understanding of key platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X/Twitter).
  • Experience working with the 2SLGBTQ+ community
  • Understanding and analysis of the systemic nature of oppression particularly the intersections of race, sexuality, gender, socio-economic status, immigration status and education – and demonstrates a passion for social justice and commitment to equity and anti-racist practice.

PLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Position Communications and Community Relations Student
Hours of Work Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

Fridays and weekends as needed

Location Due to the nature of the work, this placement will be performed primarily on site,
